When I visited the San Francisco Bay Area with my family, we rented a car to get around places. It is optimal to have a car if you plan to explore beyond San Francisco. If you’re renting a car, I’d suggest leaving as few belongings in visible sight as possible when you are not driving. Another form of transportation is the Caltrain, which connects San Francisco to parts of south Bay Area and down to Gilroy. I have taken it from Mountain View to San Francisco and back. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is like a metro/subway that connects many parts of the Bay Area as well, such as San Francisco International Airport (SFO), San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, Antioch, Fremont, and North San Jose.
