I would highly recommend renting a car to navigate the island. There are public buses but they do not cover every part of the island and are not that frequent. Compare car rental prices across numerous websites/companies (Costco, Priceline, Hertz, Enterprise, etc.) to find the best price. Be sure to book your car rental as early as possible (some sites have free cancelation) as prices can inflate due to demand especially in the summer and there is limited availability - I know people who were not able to get a car rental as they did not book it at least a month prior. Additionally, be sure that your hotel/Airbnb has a place to park your car. The hotel I stayed at charged guests per day for using the parking garage. In general, there is not a lot of free street parking as well in the touristy places.

Important note: When leaving your car to visit or eat somewhere, be sure to not leave valuables in the car as car break-ins are common. If possible, leave minimal things in plain sight and keep belongings concealed in your truck if necessary.
